Cleve’s Source for Sports Athlete of the Month for March announced

(Halifax, March 12, 2019)- Shane Sommers is the Male Individual Athlete of the Month for March. The 14-year-old skier represented Nova Scotia at Canada Games where he took home a gold medal in ski cross. Along with topping the podium, Sommers also placed 13th overall in slalom and 16th overall in super- G. The competition hosted 136 competitors from across the county.

Brenda MacDonald is the Female Individual Athlete of the Month for March. The 20-year-old took home a silver medal in the para giant slalom event at Canada Games in Red Deer. The Martock Ski Race Club member was the only para athlete on the Nova Scotian ski team and plans to continue racing at the university and international level.

The Nova Scotia Canada Games Gymnastics Team are the Team Athletes of the Month for March. Christopher Bearne, Matthew Brown, Andrew Gallant, Vincent d’Entremont, Landon Duquette, and Alex Watters combined performances in rings, high bar, floor, pommels, parallel bars, vault won them bronze in Red Deer; Nova Scotia’s first medal of the games. Sport Fund Recipient Spotlight:

Guysborough United Soccer Club

When the Chedabucto Lifestyle Complex opened a field in June 2018, the Guysborough Country Soccer Club decided it was an opportune time to launch a new program. With the help of Sport Fund, the club was able to offer reduced start-up costs and proper training for their recreation program coaches.  

“Sport Fund has helped our organization by ensuring our players had coaches with immediate training (Active Start and Fundamental Coaching training). The Sport Fund also helped our organization keep the initial sign-up fees at a lower rate to ensure our program was accessible to more players in Guysborough County” said Municipality of the District of Guysbrough Recreation Programmer and Facility Manager, Christina Bowie. Currently the club has 30 athletes and they plan to increase their registration next year by offering teams in a broader range of age groups.
